Entraygues
Entraygues (“between two waters”) is located at the confluence of the two rivers Truyère and Lot. It marked the historic upstream limit of navigation on the river.
Between the C13th and C15th the village was the property of the Count of Rodez, who constructed a castle there in 1278. Later, King Louis XI confiscated the lordship and the title passed to Guillaume de Balzac. During the wars of religion the village was taken by Protestants in 1558 and the castle partially destroyed in 1604.
The ‘gothic’ bridge over the Truyère was constructed by the archbishop of Bourges, Jean de Sully, and has been in use since 1340, although in 1388 it was partly demolished under the orders of the Count of Armagnac to help protect Entraygues from marauding bands of mercenaries. It was reinstated in 1524 and restored in 1680.
